Wedding videography has never looked this good
I am challenging the status quo of what wedding films can and should be. Gone are the days of cookie cutter wedding films with replaceable couples and cheesy music. My films have been seen on the Travel Channel, Rachael Ray Show, Red Bull Media and played in film festivals around the world. Limited to 15 films per year.

*2017 WeddingWire Couples Choice Award Winner*

I spent 20 years working in Search and Rescue as a Helicopter Rescue Swimmer in the United States Coast Guard. In those years of daring rescues, some having gone well and some ending in tragedy, I've experienced a range of emotions that very few other people ever will. I believe that I have developed a filter for what real emotions look and feel like and that I have developed a sense of storytelling that offers special insight into the human condition and connections.

In the last few years of my career in the Coast Guard, I have started a small family. My wife (Maiwenn), two young boys (Kaegan and Lachlan) and our dog (Pilot) are everything to me. The risks of going out in a helicopter on dark and stormy nights are just too high now. I have an important mission at home; raising a family.

The problem is, what career could ever come close to having nearly as much significance or emotional impact?

I decided that I wanted to celebrate life's greatest emotions and moments by memorializing them on film. Wedding films are, to me, the perfect opportunity to showcase true emotions and higher truths in a story format that reaches and inspires millions.

Although, when I started researching wedding films, I noticed that they all seemed the same. They all had the same storyline and the couples in the story seemed replaceable. The same song could be heard from film to film and that was a problem for me. No two couples are alike. All love stories are unique and should be told properly.

In the summer of 2014, I decided that I would make unique films that would capture the true emotion of real love stories. I set out to challenge the status quo of traditional wedding films. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but after thousands of hours of research, I came up with a plan for how I'd accomplish this lofty goal.

First, I didn't want to wait to learn about couples in their vows. All too often, a key part of who someone is comes out in the vows on the wedding day, but isn't discussed beforehand as the couples get to know their videographer. I would get to know their complexity and uniqueness well in advance to understand their higher truths. I would make friends with the couples and share my life with theirs. I would listen to them and have to hear their hearts. We would have to be friends first before I could tell their true story.

Second, I found that great music would change the tone of the films. I would have to choose new, unheard of, independent artists that inspire emotions. The music could not have been heard before, because then there would be an emotion attached to it already. The music would have to be new and exciting otherwise, it will remind us of something else. This would help the story speak for itself in a unique voice.

Lastly, I would have to choreograph artistic shots that would show what only two people in love could know. You know that feeling you get when you kiss the one you love and the entire world around you disappears? Well, how can I make that come across in a film? I'd use lighting tricks, smoke, bubbles, and anything else I could imagine to shape light in a way that could actually show what two people feel.

Since I've started my film company, I've used these techniques and others to create a unique and truly cinematic style that transfers the true emotions through the screen. It hasn't been easy. I've had to really gain the trust of couples so that I'd be given the freedom to create my best work.

Because I have been able to create something unique and lasting, it has been an amazing ride. It's been adventure to say the least. It's been every bit as rewarding as a saving lives in the Bering Sea. In the end, I've gotten to surround myself with amazing people who truly love each other and I've gotten the pleasure of telling their true love story.
